Stewardship

MLR’s stewardship team is responsible for fulfilling annual monitoring obligations for the conservation easements we hold – forever. Once an easement is completed, our work is just beginning.

Stewardship staff monitor every conserved property at least once a year to ensure the terms of the easement are being followed. With advances in technology, this is accomplished through a combination of remote monitoring using high-resolution satellite imagery and in-person visits to the property. These visits are an opportunity to walk or drive the land, take photos, document conditions, and give landowners a chance to ask questions.

MLR approaches stewardship as a long-term partnership. Good communication is key, and most questions or concerns are resolved through conversation and collaboration. Our goal is to be a helpful resource while also upholding the intent of each easement.

If a potential issue arises, we document it carefully and work directly with the landowner to find a solution that restores compliance and protects the conservation values of the property. Because conservation easements are permanent legal agreements, we take our responsibility seriously, but we always lead with communication and cooperation.

Stewardship is about protecting Montana’s working lands, wildlife habitat, and open spaces for generations to come, and we’re proud to stand alongside landowners in that commitment.
